Graphite electrode is also called graphite electrode rod, as a conductor to heat the melting furnace.
Graphite electrode rod meaning?
Graphite electrode rod is mainly made of petroleum coke, needle coke as raw material, coal pitch as binder, after calcination, ingredients, kneading, pressing, roasting, graphitization, machining and released in the electric arc furnace steelmaking in the form of an arc Electric energy as a conductor to heat the melting furnace. According to graphite electrode quality indicators, can be divided into ordinary power graphite electrode, HP graphite electrode and UHP graphite electrode.
The difference between graphite rod and graphite electrode rod:
Graphite electrodes are made through a graphitization process, while graphite rods are not graphitized.
Graphite rods are used as electrodes in electrolysis because graphite’s structure enables it to be an excellent conductor. So graphite electrode rods are relatively expensive and are mainly used for electric arc furnace steelmaking.
Graphite electrode rod advantages
• Processing speed is faster: Under normal circumstances, graphite machining speed can be 2 to 5 times faster than copper; and discharge processing speed is 2 to 3 times faster than copper.
• The material is more difficult to deform: obvious advantages in the thin-walled electrode processing.
• Lighter weight: the density of graphite is only 1/5 of copper, large electrode for electrical discharge machining, can effectively reduce the machine tool (EDM) burden; more suitable for large mold applications.
• Low loss.
Graphite electrode rod market
When steel markets started to recover during late-2016 into early-2017 – in response to improving global economic conditions – demand for electrodes also picked up. This coincided with the Chinese government closing induction-furnace production of low-quality steel, a decline in net exports from China, and an impetus for more EAF-based steelmaking in the country and elsewhere.
The market is segmented based on the product type as ultra-high power (UHP), high power (HP), and regular power (RP). UHP is expected to remain the most dominant as well as the fastest-growing electrode type during the forecast period. Higher durability, higher thermal resistance, and superior quality are some of the properties that are propelling the demand for UHP graphite electrode, especially in the steel industry. All the major global players are primarily into the manufacturing of UHP graphite electrodes.
