1.Graphite Electrodes wiki
Graphite electrode refers to a kind of high temperature resistant graphite conductive material made by using petroleum coke and pitch coke as aggregate and coal pitch as binder, after raw material calcination, crushing and grinding, batching, kneading, mixing and extrusion, baking, impregnation, graphitization and machining, called artificial graphite electrodes (referred to as graphite electrodes), are distinguished from natural graphite electrodes prepared with natural graphite as raw materials.
Graphite electrodes are used primarily in electric arc furnace steel manufacturing. Graphite electrodes can provide high levels of electrical conductivity and capability of sustaining the extremely high levels of generated heat. Graphite electrodes are also used in the refinement of steel and similar smelting processes.
Graphite electrodes are selected based on some of the following application considerations:
•Furnace design
•Scrap requirements
•Charging practice
•Burner/Oxygen usage
•Water spray rings
•Fume control system
•Meltdown/Refine/Tap-to-Tap Time
•Power level
•Slag practice
2.Types of Graphite Electrodes
Graphite electrodes are divided into 4 Types: RP Graphite electrodes, HP Graphite electrodes, SHP Graphite electrodes, UHP Graphite electrodes.
(1) RP Graphite electrodes
RP graphite electrode is mainly used for regular power electric arc furnaces to smelt scrap steel, silicon and yellow phosphorus. RP graphite electrodes, referred to moulded columns of graphite, are used as the high temperature conductive material for electric arc furnaces.
(2) HP Graphite electrodes
HP graphite electrode is mainly used for high power electric arc furnaces with the current density range of 18–25 A/cm2. HP graphite electrode is the conducting element for electric arc furnaces steelmaking. It is made of petroleum coke, needle coke, coal pitch and produced by a series of strict production processes.
(3) SHP Graphite electrodes
The graphite electrode with grade of Super High Power(SHP for short) is produced and specified with allowable current density less than 18~25A/cm2. SHP electrode is widely used in electric furnace with super high power for steel melting.
(4) UHP graphite electrode is used for the recycling of steel in the electric arc furnace industry. Its main ingredient is high-value needle coke which is made from either petroleum or coal tar. Graphite electrodes are finished with a cylinder shape and machined with threaded areas at each end. In this way, the graphite electrodes can be assembled into an electrode column using electrode nipple.
