1. What is needle coke graphite electrode
Needle coke is used as a primary raw material for graphite electrodes in electric furnace. It is a premium grade, high value petroleum coke used in the manufacturing of graphite electrodes of very low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) for the electric arc furnaces in the steel industry.  When making the electrodes, it takes up to six months to make with processes including baking and rebaking to convert the coke into graphite.
There is coal-based needle coke and petroleum-based needle coke , and either can be used to produce graphite electrodes.Coal-based needle coke is produced from coal tar that appears during coke production. Compared to petroleum-based needle coke, coal-based needle coke has excellent physical properties, such as low co-efficient of thermal expansion and low electric resistance, along with less spalling and less breakage.
Foreign carbon companies often produce large-size UHP and HP graphite electrodes with high-quality petroleum needle coke as the main raw material coke. Japanese carbon companies also use some coal-based needle coke as raw materials, but only for the production of graphite electrodes with a diameter of less than 600 mm. The needle coke in China is currently dominated by coal-based needle coke.
2. How to make needle coke
Needle coke is produced exclusively from either fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) decant oil or coal tar pitch. Honeycomb coke is an intermediate coke, with ellipsoidal pores that are uniformly distributed.

4. Mitsubishi chemical needle coke
In Mitsubishi Chemical, coal-based needle coke is produced from coal tar that appears during coke production. Mitsubishi Chemical was the first company in the world to successfully produce coal-based needle coke.
There are only two companies in the world producing needle coke from coal.  Mitsubishi Chemical's needle coke has excellent physical properties, such as low co-efficient of thermal expansion and low electric resistance, along with less spalling and less breakage.
