Elastic Modulus is one of the indexes in graphite electrode standard, It also includes Bulk Density, Specific Resistance, Flexural Strength, Coefficient of Thermal Expansion and Ash Content.
Eaf steelmaking uses electric energy as heat source, and graphite electrode is needed as conductive material in the energy conversion process. Electric power is then generated by an arc through a graphite electrode which is used to heat the melted furnace burden.
It is the arc generated between the electrode and the electrode or between the electrode and the furnace burden. Electric energy is converted into heat in the arc light, which heats and melts the metal and charge to smelt steel with various compositions.

The Elastic Modulus is an index for testing the elastic deformation ability of graphite electrodes. The unit is GPa. The larger the Elastic Modulus value indicates that the more brittle the graphite electrode material is, the poorer the thermal vibration resistance, which is prone to cracking and chipping. The smaller the modulus of elasticity, the softer the graphite electrode.
Different grades of graphite electrodes have different elastic modulus.
