Difference between graphite electrode vs carbon electrode
The biggest difference between graphite electrode and carbon electrode is whether it is graphitized or not, and the application is also different

Graphite electrode

Graphite electrode refers to a kind of high temperature resistant graphite conductive material made by using petroleum coke and pitch coke as aggregate and coal pitch as binder, after raw material calcination, crushing and grinding, batching, kneading, mixing and extrusion, baking, impregnation, graphitization and machining, called artificial graphite electrodes (referred to as graphite electrodes).
Graphite electrodes are used primarily in electric arc furnace steel manufacturing. Graphite electrodes can provide high levels of electrical conductivity and capability of sustaining the extremely high levels of generated heat. Graphite electrodes are also used in the refinement of steel and similar smelting processes.

Carbon electrode

The carbon electrode is made from low ash anthracite, metallurgical coke, bituminous coke and petroleum coke. According to a certain proportion and particle size, the binder bitumen and tar are added in the mixture, mixed uniformly at the appropriate temperature, pressed into shape, and then slowly roasted in the roasting furnace.
Carbon electrodes have excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, heat resistance, chemical resistance, high mechanical strength, and easy processing and forming. Widely used in metallurgy, chemical industry, electrochemistry and other industries, such as electrodes for electric arc furnaces, electrodes for electrolysis, electrodes for batteries, etc.
Carbon electrodes are made by mixing pitch coke, petroleum coke and adhesives and then carbonized. The degree of graphitization is not high and the conductivity is not as good as graphite electrodes. It can be used for electrolysis electrodes such as aluminum and magnesium, and battery electrodes.

Graphite electrode vs carbon electrode

1) The carbon electrode is composed of carbon, but does not contain graphite. The sintering temperature after forming is only 1000°C, and there is no graphitization process. Graphite electrode is made from petroleum coke and asphalt coke, and then put into the graphitized resistance furnace with the temperature of 2000~2500℃.
2) The diameter of the carbon electrode can do big, now can produce Φ 650 - Φ 1200 mm carbon electrode, graphite electrode is domestic only do Φ 700 mm
3) The carbon electrode has no graphitization or the degree of graphitization is not high. The graphite electrode has a high degree of graphitization and high physicochemical index
4) Carbon electrode is mainly used in industrial silicon, yellow phosphorus, calcium carbide, ferroalloy and other smelting furnace, while graphite electrode is mainly used in electric arc furnace steelmaking
5) Carbon electrode is cheaper than graphite electrode
